Sorting removes the caps the capper cannot use.
A bottle cap sorter improves reliability by preventing wrong-way caps, bridged caps or unsuitable orientations from reaching the capping head. It may be integrated into a bowl feeder or supplied as part of a separate feed path.
The sorter has to be designed around the physical features of the cap. Skirt depth, tamper band, top profile and centre of gravity all affect whether the cap can be sorted mechanically.
For high-speed or repeatable production, sorting should be assessed together with chute control and capper start-stop signals.
