Cap feeder or cap sorter: what is the difference?

A cap feeder is the wider system that supplies closures to a capping machine; a cap sorter is the part that creates or verifies the required cap orientation. The terms are sometimes used loosely, so the quotation should define functions rather than rely on the name.

A sorter is one function inside a possible feeding system.

A complete cap feeding route can store loose closures, meter them into a handling device, separate overlaps, orientate acceptable caps, reject or recirculate wrong-way caps, hold a controlled queue and deliver each closure to a chute, pick point or placement mechanism. A cap sorter is normally responsible for the orientation and rejection part of that route.

Some suppliers use “cap feeder”, “cap sorter”, “cap orientator” and “cap unscrambler” for overlapping equipment. That is not automatically wrong, but a buyer should compare the stated scope: hopper, elevator, bowl or rotary sorter, discharge, sensors, controls, guarding, cap release and final placement.

Can a cap sorter operate without a complete feeder system?

A cap sorter can be supplied as one stage that receives caps from a separate hopper, elevator or pre-feeder and discharges to equipment supplied elsewhere. It still needs a controlled inlet, a defined outlet and coordination with the downstream capper, so the surrounding functions cannot be ignored simply because they are outside the sorter package.

Check who supplies the bulk loading, transfer track, sensors, guarding and controls. A technically capable sorter can still be unusable if the interfaces and responsibilities are left between suppliers.

Why do suppliers sometimes use feeder and sorter as interchangeable terms?

Commercial machine names often describe the main visible device rather than every function included. A bowl “feeder” also sorts; an elevator “sorter” may include a hopper; an “unscrambler” may deliver a fully oriented cap. The words therefore overlap across manufacturers and applications.

Compare the process description, layout and acceptance scope instead of assuming identical packages from similar names. The quotation should show the inlet condition, outlet condition and included controls.

Use the term that describes the known problem, then add the required outcome. For example: “automatic cap feeding system to receive loose screw caps and present them open-side down to the existing capper” is clearer than requesting only a cap sorter.
